AI has improved rapidly in recent years, taking over many different industries. Though this transformative technology has exponentially increased efficiency within certain fields, it raises alarming concerns about future reliance on artificial intelligence.
Regarding AI usage in school, the education system has been continuously undermined due to how easy it is for students to cheat on assignments without engaging with the material.
While the misuse of AI is dangerous, it is also important to recognize the countless benefits that it can provide when used responsibly to aid you with work. My first introduction to AI was last year in my history class. My teacher had multiple lessons dedicated to explaining how to use ChatGPT responsibly. These classes taught me skills such as reviewing sources or verifying information with AI and opened my eyes to how it could be a valuable resource rather than a way to cheat.
Have you ever had a video assigned to you, in which the teacher just glossed over the topic, leaving you clueless? This is where AI comes in handy, as you do not need to search up the question on Google, scour numerous websites, and piece together small pieces of information when you can simply have AI compile a detailed explanation in a few seconds. The ability to personalize information is one of AI’s greatest strengths and has helped me bridge gaps and reinforce specific areas where I struggle.
AI also helps when your teacher wants you to use a source from the library database, and you’re forced to reference a book from 1954 written by a professor with a doctorate that's 20 pages long and uses words you’ve never even heard of when all you need is just that one paragraph of information. AI has saved me hours of reading by locating specific information without my having to rummage through multiple pages of irrelevant information before getting to what I want.
AI’s utility extends beyond the classroom. As my history teacher had done for our class, I introduced my parents to ChatGPT. Because my parents never received a formal English education, ChatGPT helped them write more professional and polished emails by improving clarity and reducing grammatical errors, thus allowing them to communicate more effectively with their English-speaking customers.
As AI continues to evolve, it will become increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, which is why I believe that AI should be embraced in the classroom. Instead of merely focusing on the faults and dangers of AI, we should also assess its capabilities and boons, using it to enhance our education while avoiding the annoying complications that we often have to experience.
