Last week was National Voter Education Week, a week dedicated to providing information and tools to new, young voters to encourage increased participation for the future. In Mercersburg, recently-turned 18-year-old students are looking to cast their ballots, “I do plan to vote [in the upcoming midterm elections] because I believe it is important and part of our job as citizens,” said Dylan Stiffler ‘24.

Unlike Stiffler, there are some students who have decided to not take part in the midterm elections. “I won't be voting in the midterms since I think I don't have enough information yet to establish my own opinion, especially in the American political context,” said Jooa Lee ‘23 who has dual citizenship in both the United States and South Korea.

Director of Community Engagement Emily Parsons stressed the importance of voting. She said, “As a person living in a democracy, I don't take it lightly at all because I know how easily it can be taken away. Voting is our voice and our power. As a teacher and as the Director of Community Engagement, I would love to find ways to expand this conversation.”
